Our Story

A Studio Built for Curious Young Minds

Northstar Atelier began with a simple belief: that the best time to introduce money vocabulary to a child is through a story, not a spreadsheet.

Who We Are

The Story Behind Northstar Atelier

Northstar Atelier was founded in George Town, Penang, by a small group of educators and parents who found themselves asking the same question: why does money education for children always look like a scaled-down version of adult finance? The answer, they felt, was to start differently — not with numbers or rules, but with stories that children actually want to follow.

The studio opened with a single Saturday workshop pilot in early 2022. The response from families in Penang was thoughtful and warm. Parents noticed something shift at home — their children began noticing prices at the market, asking questions about saving, and talking about what things cost in a way that felt curious rather than anxious.

That first small group became the foundation for everything that followed. Today, Northstar Atelier runs three structured programmes that serve families throughout Penang, each built around the same principle: that children learn best when they feel safe, seen, and not rushed.

Our Mission

To give every child in our care a calm, age-appropriate introduction to the vocabulary and ideas of money — through stories, play, and family conversation — without pressure, assessment, or adult framing.

  • Education-first: All content is purely educational and age-appropriate for children 6–10.
  • Family-centred: Parents are partners, not bystanders. Summaries and prompts keep the learning going at home.
  • Non-pressured: No scores, no tests, no competitive element. Children explore at their own pace.
  • Story-led: Picture books and narrative are the primary vehicles for every concept we introduce.

How We Work

Our Standards & Approach

Child-Centred Design

Every activity in our programmes is reviewed for age-appropriateness before it enters the classroom. We follow guidance from Malaysian early childhood education frameworks.

Privacy & Data Care

We collect only the minimum information needed to manage enrolments. Children's personal data is never shared with third parties, and our practices comply with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Vetted Facilitators

All session facilitators undergo a background check and hold relevant qualifications in early childhood or primary education. We keep our facilitator-to-child ratio at 1:8 or better.

Inclusive Environment

Our studio is designed to be welcoming for children of all backgrounds. Materials are free from aspirational or pressure-based messaging, and the tone of every session is supportive and unhurried.

Parent Communication

We maintain open, regular communication with parents throughout each programme. Weekly summaries and conversation prompts ensure that families can continue the learning at home with confidence.

Curriculum Integrity

Our programmes are reviewed annually to ensure content remains appropriate, relevant, and aligned with the educational needs of children aged 6–10 in the Malaysian context.

Children's Money Education in Penang

Northstar Atelier operates from the heart of George Town's heritage quarter, in a studio that feels more like a reading corner than a classroom. The space was chosen deliberately — children who feel comfortable in a room tend to listen more openly and participate more willingly. Picture books line the shelves, and every session is structured around a story arc rather than a syllabus.

The three programmes we run — a single-day workshop, a term-long storybook series, and a twelve-month curriculum — are designed to meet families wherever they are. Some parents want to try a session before committing to something longer. Others prefer a continuous, structured programme that builds vocabulary week by week. The annual curriculum is for households who want money education to become part of their family's regular rhythm throughout the year.

What unites all three is the same approach: gentle, story-led, non-pressured. There is no assessment, no competitive element, and no aspirational framing. Children are not told that money is the path to anything. They are simply given the vocabulary and the space to think about it with curiosity, in a setting that feels safe and familiar.

Northstar Atelier serves families across George Town and the wider Penang area. Sessions run on weekends and are kept small to ensure every child receives adequate attention. Enrolment is available by enquiry throughout the year, with new intake dates announced ahead of each Malaysian school term.
